Wesley, **Raven student and aspiring musician, is playing and singing for tourists this summer in Tok, with Dave Stancliff, Floyd Siegler and Jeanne Siegler.

During a recent trip to the Anchorage zoo, Quinn, grade 5, fell in love with
the Snow Leopards. He made them the topic for his science project and earned a
first prize for excellence at
the Fairbanks Homeschool Science Fair in February.

Raven home-schooler, Ryan Dunham-Bender (14) of Delta Junction competed in
the men's National Junior Olympic Rifle Championship which was held March 16-21
at the US Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Shooters were
invited to this match based on scores earned at State Junior Olympic matches all
across the country. The results of this match were used for US Development Team
selection. Of the 67 young men competing at the Training Center this year (aged
11-21), about a quarter were either members of collegiate rifle teams or of the
US Development Team! Rye shot very well, ending up in about the middle of the
pack. In the prone event, Rye placed 27th overall.
This trip provided a unique opportunity to compete in an international-style
environment as the rifle range equipment at the Olympic Training Center is state
of the art. The indoor range itself is a full 50 meters (most indoor ranges in
the US are 50 feet). There are no paper targets used at all for the smallbore
(.22 caliber) rifle shooters, as all shooting is instantaneously scored
electronically.
Rye hopes to use what he learned in Colorado to get back down there. He already
has his eye on next year's tryouts.

Raven Student
Wins National Essay Contest
Ryan Dunham-Bender won the junior division (grades 9 and
below) of the NRA Civil Rights Defense Fund’s 2004-2005 National Youth Essay
Contest, “The Second Amendment to the Constitution: Why it is important to our
nation?” Ryan, an 8th grader may have the distinction of having the
largest teacher to student ratio in Alaska: 4-1.
His mother, Tracy Dunham, works with him in most of his classes, and dad, Mike Bender, is the logistics specialist. Bill Dunham, Ryan’s grandfather, is not only his demanding English teacher, but his rifle coach as well. Rye’s grandmother, Lucy Dunham, is his Spelling/Vocabulary teacher. Bill and Lucy are both retired from working full-time at the Delta/Greely School District and are enjoying their newest educational roles. Congratulations to Ryan who earned a $1000 savings bond for his first place finish in this competition. Ryan not only writes well, he also shoots well and looks forward to future rifle competitions.
